Doors - Rolling Steel Overview

Rolling steel doors are also a very common door especially in industrial applications, storage facilities and for use as fire doors. Like sectional steel doors they can be ordered manual (push pull), chain hoist or electric operator (motor) operation. Unlike sectional steel doors they do not have the option to be insulated. Rolling steel doors operate by rolling and unrolling individual sections called slats on and off of a steel drum.  The slats can vary in height depending on the manufacturer and size of the door opening (usually about 2”).  These slats are attached on each end with endlocks or windlocks  mounted at intervals of every other slat.  This servers two purposes: The endlocks keep the slats from sliding from side to side and they keep the curtain in the tracks.  This slat configuration when assembled forms a curtain.  The curtain rides up and down the door tracks mounted to each side of the door opening.  The door operates by using one or more torsion springs set onto a steel shaft.  A torsion spring is a  spring that works by torsion or twisting; that is, a flexible object that stores mechanical energy when it is twisted. The amount of force (torque) it exerts is proportional to the amount it is twisted.  If twisted to tight the door will go up too fast and hard. If twisted to loose the door will be too heavy to go or stay up.  The entire curtain is attached to the drum by anchoring the top slat to the drum with screws.  The drum and curtain are mounted above the header of the door to special mounting/hanger brackets & hardware.  The mounting brackets are then mounted to the wall. Doors must be properly maintained and inspected as they can injure or kill anyone caught under a falling door. Doors that are not adjusted properly can creep down into the opening and be damaged by a forkilft or product. This will not only damage the door but could potentially cause injury. Proper maintenance and inspection is vital to having a safe and efficient working environment.
